Quality Programs - Impact 2012
Members come to Rotary BGC because it’s a fun, safe, and positive place, but they also get much more! In 2007, Boys & Girls Clubs of America introduced “Impact 2012,” an effort to reach deeper into the lives of those we serve, impacting them in a lasting, comprehensive way. The campaign revolves around three core Areas of Impact:
Academic Success - Improving grades, reducing high school drop-out rates, and teaching kids to see themselves as learners.
Healthy Lifestyles —Teaching healthy behaviors, reducing drug use and childhood obesity, and fostering a positive self-image.
Good Character and Citizenship —Encouraging community service, reducing juvenile crime rates, and instilling a sense of civic engagement.
Rotary Boys & Girls Club offers a variety of age-appropriate, exciting, and nationally recognized programs within each impact area.
Academic Success
Our Academic Success Programs aim to help youth set goals, become proficient in math, reading and science, apply learning to everyday situations, and develop technology skills to be successful in a global workforce. Below are several programs we offer seasonally or throughout the year to our members.
Education & Career Development
R.E.A.P. – ROTARY EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Established in 1989 by Phil Smart Sr. and Seattle Rotary #4, the REAP tutoring program is designed to help members achieve their full academic potential. Volunteer tutors from local universities and colleges work individually with members on daily homework, school projects, enrichment activities and study skills. Youth are encouraged and challenged in their academics, rewarded for their progress, and celebrated for their commitment to their education. REAP is for Club members in grades 5-12 and is open daily from 3-7pm.
POWER HOUR: All members who are not enrolled in REAP still participate daily in Power Hour – a dedicated time to complete homework, read a book, or participate in a high-yield learning activity.
E-POINTS: Members in the 5th grade and up have the opportunity to earn Education Point (E-Points) that can be used at the weekly E-Points Store. E-Points are earned by doing homework, participating in core programs, Art & Technology Classes, random acts of kindness and much more. The more points you earn the better items you can “purchase” at the store.
LEADERS & ACHIEVERS: Through this program, teens are encouraged to think and plan for their future, including post high school education. Sponsored by Seattle Rotary #4, Leaders & Achievers invites guests, including Rotarians, from a variety of career backgrounds to speak with teens about the path they took to get where they are today. The program also touches on planning for college and applying for financial aid.
LOLLIPOP READING CLUB: Lollipop Reading takes place every Friday at 4:30pm, for the all 1st-3rd grade members. Kids get to enjoy some quiet time to read an interesting chapter book, read as a group, or have a book read to them, all while working on comprehension and reading proficiency.
Technology
DIGITAL ARTS FESTIVALS: The Digital Arts Festivals are part of Club Tech, a partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America, founding partner Microsoft and the Best Buy Children’s Foundation. Festivals celebrate participants’ creativity in combining technology and the arts through friendly competitions on the local, regional and national levels. Festivals encompass music making, digital photo illustration, web design, and graphic design.
CLUB TECH: Club Tech aims to provide Clubs with the latest software and programming to equip young people, particularly those who need us most, with basic and advanced technical skills to excel in school and the job market.

The Arts
NATIONAL FINE ARTS PROGRAM: This year-round program encourages artistic expression among Club members ages 6-18 through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media and sculpture, while providing opportunities for members to create artwork for display in our local art exhibit.
CLAY TECH: Clay Tech provides Club members with an educational, engaging and fun experience, exposing them to the art and science involved in creating animation.
WEEKLY ART ROTATIONS: Members have the opportunity to work on projects in the art room at least once a week as part of their weekly routine at the Club. Throughout the year, members can work on a variety of projects using multiple mediums, including water color, oil and acrylic paints, print making, wire, recycled materials, charcoal, pastels, and much more!
Healthy Lifestyles
Our healthy lifestyle programs develop fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, social skills, and of course, good old fashion fun and games.
Health & Life Skills
SMART GIRLS: Our teen girls meet once a week to discuss issues & challenges facing young women today in society, school, and family life. They work on activities to boost self-esteem, confidence, relationships, leadership, independence, and much more.
WISE GUYS: Teen boys meet once a week to discuss issues facing young men in society, school, and family life. They talk about maturity, relationships, goal setting, decision making, gangs, hygiene, and much more.
COOKING CLUB: Members learn healthy, culturally diverse, and easy to cook recipes they can make at home. Classes regularly incorporate practicing fractions & measurements as well as food presentation techniques, nutrition facts, and etiquette.
CHILL: More than learning to snowboard, this program engages teens in self-discovery, goal-setting, and developing a moral compass. Teens who have been in the program before have opportunities to serve as peer leaders for new participants. CHILL runs every winter between January and mid-March.
Sports, Fitness, & Recreation
ALL GIRLS’ & ALL BOYS’ GYM W/SEATTLE U: On Wednesdays, girls have opportunities to learn new sports or play favorite games with Seattle U Women Student Athletes without the boys getting in the way! Boys have the opportunity to learn new sports on Tuesdays with SU Men Student Athletes without the girls getting in the way!
FUN IN THE GAMES ROOM! Whether it’s a challenging pool game, a fast-paced round of ping pong, or a Connect 4 Challenge, there is always something happening in the games room for members each day!
OPEN GYM & LARGE GROUP GAMES: Members have opportunities to play full-court basketball, BUMP, jump rope, and much more! Large group games are also a fun favorite among members.

Programs supporting Good Character & Citizenship empower youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and others’ cultural identities.
YOUTH OF THE QUARTER: The Youth of the Quarter award is given to those members who exemplify the values and mission of the Boys & Girls Club, while standing out as a leader among their peers. Receiving the Youth of the Quarter award also qualifies the Club member to compete in the Youth of the Year program for scholarships and other prizes.
YOUTH OF THE YEAR: Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs’ premier youth recognition program for Club members. This program is designed to recognize service to the Club and community, academic performance, contributions to family, and moral character. Those individuals selected for the Youth of the Quarter award are eligible to compete for the Youth of the Year award on a Club, County, State and National level. Each year the five regional winners meet in Washington D.C. to compete for the honor of becoming the National Youth of the Year.
KEYSTONE CLUB: Keystone Clubs are chartered leadership and service clubs for members ages 14-18. Keystoners elect officers and implement activities in six areas: Service to Club and Community, Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Exploration, Unity, Free Enterprise, and Social Recreation.
TORCH CLUB: Torch Clubs are small-group leadership and service clubs for members ages 11-13. Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: Service to Club and Community, Education, Health and Fitness, and Recreation. Torch Club members learn and practice all skills necessary to participate in Keystone Club.
Teen Camps
S.M.A.R.T. Summer for Teens (Grades 6-7)
S.M.A.R.T. Camp (Science, Math, Art, Reading, and Technology) is a free program designed to stimulate young minds throughout the summer and prepare our teen members for upcoming academic challenges in the year ahead. Members will explore science, math, art, reading, and technology Monday through Thursday with fun field trips on Fridays. After the program ends each day, participants become part of the Teen Drop-In program for no additional charge.
Teen Drop-In
During the summer our Drop-In program is only offered to middle/high school youth. Rotary’s Summer Drop-In program provides a safe, fun place to visit during the summer months. Occasional field trips are provided – these opportunities will be posted on the summer bulletin board on a daily basis.
